XR production & virtual production, explained
Guides, use cases and practical tips from a working XR stage in Germany, written by the team that runs it, not by a marketing department.
What is XR production?
XR, extended reality, is the umbrella term for shooting live action against real-time digital environments instead of a physical location or a green screen. On an LED volume, the environment is rendered live in a game engine, displayed on a high-resolution LED wall and tracked to the camera, so perspective, reflections and lighting behave the way they would on location. The finished look is captured in camera, which is why the method is also called in-camera VFX (ICVFX).
In practice the terms overlap: XR production, XR stage, virtual production and LED volume are largely used for the same setup. What matters is what it changes on a shoot, several environments in a single day, no travel between locations, no weather risk, and no compositing surprises weeks later in post.
We run a 35 m² XR stage in Erlangen near Nuremberg, Germany, and work in English end to end. The guides below go into the technology, the trade-offs and the costs in detail.
