For most industrial films, the most expensive set already exists. It is sitting in engineering, as a CAD assembly, as the BIM model of a plant still under construction, or as a 3D dataset the sales team uses for configurators. Built for manufacturing and sign-off, that same data can go onto an LED wall and become a set that real people stand in.
For manufacturers this is often a shorter route to a finished film than any location shoot. Production lines keep running, prototypes stay where they are, and a machine that ships in eight months is on camera today.
Why engineering data is not ready to shoot
There is real work between a CAD file and a usable backdrop, and skipping it is how shoot days go wrong. CAD systems describe geometry mathematically through exact surfaces and solids, because parts get manufactured from it. A real-time engine works with triangle meshes and has to deliver every frame without dropping one.
Four steps sit in between:
- Tessellation: Exact surfaces are converted into a polygon mesh. The tolerance you choose decides whether a fillet still reads as round in a close-up or turns faceted.
- Defeaturing: An assembly contains everything, including every internal screw and thread. Anything the camera never sees comes out. This is the single biggest lever on performance.
- Materials, not colour codes: CAD knows part colours, not surfaces. Brushed aluminium, powder-coated steel, exposed concrete and matte glass only appear once someone builds PBR materials, and that is where realism is won or lost.
- Lighting: Lighting is what turns a correct model into an image. That is camera work, not an engineering task.

What the LED wall makes possible
Once the scene runs in real time, the shoot day changes character. The set stops being fixed and becomes adjustable:
- The plant at 1:1 scale, with your product manager standing in front of it explaining the process, while the real machine is still being commissioned.
- A look inside: hide the housing, cut through the assembly, expose material flow. Impossible in a working factory, one click between takes here.
- Variants without a reshoot: a different finish, a different configuration level, a different hall layout for an export market. Same take, several versions.

The strongest case: filming what does not exist yet
The most valuable use case is the film that has to exist before the product does. Trade-fair content, sales material and press assets are all needed before the first unit is built. From an engineering point of view the product is already complete. From a film point of view it does not exist at all.
A set built from CAD data closes exactly that gap. You shoot with real people, real light and an environment that matches the current release state. When the design changes, the scene gets updated instead of the shoot getting repeated.
What to prepare
Three things decide whether the data route runs smoothly:
- Agree on format and revision. Neutral exchange formats such as STEP or IFC are usually the pragmatic choice. What matters more is which release state is binding, so last month’s revision does not end up in the finished film.
- Settle confidentiality first. Engineering data is sensitive. What may appear in the scene, and what gets stripped beforehand, belongs in the conversation before the data handover, not in the shooting schedule.
- Plan the lead time. Data preparation is pre-production and happens well before the shoot day. How that plays into the overall budget is broken down in How Virtual Production Cuts Shoot Day Costs.
