The LED Wall Explained: Camera Tracking, Unreal Engine & the 'Volume'

The LED wall is the heart of every virtual production studio. But an “LED wall” is not just an LED wall: the screen that shows a keynote at a trade fair has little in common with a film LED wall. Only the interplay of precise panels, camera tracking and a real-time engine turns a glowing screen into what the industry calls a volume, a walk-in backdrop that looks real in camera. This article explains the technology behind it, without the jargon.

What is a “volume”?

A volume is the connected LED surface you shoot inside, often a curved wall, sometimes extended with an LED ceiling. The term comes from high-end production (“The Mandalorian”) and means more than a screen: the volume surrounds the subject, so the light, colour and reflections of the virtual environment fall for real on people and objects. One distinction matters for planning: an event or trade-fair LED wall is built to be seen by an audience from several metres away. A film LED wall has to hold up at close camera range, which places entirely different demands on resolution, frame rate and colour accuracy.

Pixel pitch: why the gap between the dots counts

The pixel pitch is the distance between two LED points, measured in millimetres. The smaller the number (e.g. 2.3 mm or 1.9 mm), the finer the image, and the closer the camera can get to the wall before individual pixels or a grid become visible. A fine pitch therefore widens the usable shooting range. For distant backgrounds that sit out of focus anyway, a coarser pitch is fine; for subjects close to the wall, a fine pitch is decisive.

A classic pitfall is moiré, a shimmering interference pattern that appears when the LED grid and the camera sensor “fight” each other. It can be avoided through pitch, distance, focus (letting the background fall slightly soft) and the right aperture.

Camera tracking: perspective-correct depth

The second building block is camera tracking. Sensors capture in real time where the camera is and how it moves. That data goes to the render engine, which adjusts the section shown on the wall, the frustum, live to match the camera’s perspective.

The result: as the camera dollies or pans, the background shifts exactly as physics demands. Near objects travel faster than distant ones, creating real parallax and therefore spatial depth. Without tracking the wall stays a flat projection; with tracking it becomes a window into a three-dimensional world.

Unreal Engine: an environment that reacts in minutes

The scene is usually rendered in the Unreal Engine, a real-time games engine. Its advantage on set: changes are visible immediately. Time of day, the position of the sun, fog, a brand’s colour world or a swapped-out backdrop, everything can be adjusted in minutes, instead of waiting weeks in post-production. Your own 3D, CAD or BIM data can also be brought in as a walk-in set, especially relevant for industry and medical technology in the Nuremberg metropolitan region.

For wall, camera and engine to work together cleanly, genlock keeps every component frame-accurately in sync. Without that synchronisation you get banding or stutter in the image, a detail that, in the finished take, makes the difference between “real” and “somehow wrong”.
