Virtual production is a shooting method in which digital environments are rendered in real time on a large LED wall and captured directly in camera. Instead of filming against a green screen and adding the world later in post, the finished backdrop is already there on set, visible to the crew, the camera and the client.
How does virtual production work?
Three building blocks work together:
- LED wall (the “volume”): A high-resolution wall displays the environment, a desert, a night skyline, a factory floor or an abstract brand world.
- Camera tracking: The camera’s position is captured in real time. As the camera moves, the background shifts in a perspective-correct way, creating real spatial depth instead of a flat projection.
- Real-time engine (Unreal Engine): The environment is rendered live and can be adjusted in minutes: time of day, lighting, backdrop.

How is it different from green screen?
With green screen the background is added afterwards, with the risk that reflections, light and focus don’t match the scene. On the LED wall the light of the environment falls for real on people and objects: glasses, paint and metal reflect believably, and everyone sees the finished image immediately.
