The quote looks convincing at first. You need an LED wall for a shoot day, you find a rental company with plenty of surface area, short lead time and a price well below any virtual production studio. Both are LED walls, both display an image, both are rented by the day. The difference only surfaces once the footage is in the edit: bands drift through the frame, the background sits behind the talent like wallpaper, and the colour of the wall does not match the light on the faces.
The reason is unremarkable. You compared two different products that happen to share a name.
Two products, one name
An event LED screen is built to be looked at by people. An audience in a hall, several metres away, in bright ambient light. Everything about it serves that purpose: brightness, robustness, fast build and strike, and a price that pays off across many jobs.
An LED volume for virtual production is built to be recorded by a camera sensor, often from a few metres away. That is a different job, and it places different demands on every single component.
The eye forgives a great deal. It evens out brightness fluctuations, ignores a fine grid and glosses over brief dropouts. A sensor does none of this. It records what is actually there, thirty or fifty times a second, and makes every fault permanent.
What the camera sees and the eye does not
Three things decide whether a wall holds up on camera.
Sync. An LED wall does not build its image in one pass. It assembles it from very fast light and dark cycles that the eye merges into a steady picture. The camera shutter, however, opens for a fraction of a second and catches an arbitrary slice of that cycle. The result is dark bands rolling through the frame. The fix is a high refresh rate plus genlock, the frame-accurate coupling of wall, processing and camera. Event processors generally do not offer it, because nobody needs it for what they are built to do.
Pixel pitch. The distance between two LED points determines how close the camera may get. Event screens often sit around 2.6 to 3.9 mm, which is entirely sufficient at five metres of audience distance. Move a camera closer and the grid becomes visible, or turns into shimmering moiré, the interference pattern that appears when the LED grid and the sensor grid fight each other.
Colour. Event screens are tuned for impact: high brightness and punchy colour in a bright hall. On camera you need the opposite, a wall whose panels are calibrated against each other and whose colour space matches the one you grade in. Otherwise the background drifts away from the foreground, and fixing that in post is laborious and rarely complete.
All three are solvable technical questions. The real difference lies elsewhere.
The difference that appears on no spec sheet
An event LED screen plays a video file. It shows the same image no matter where the camera stands. Track left, and the background stays exactly as it was. That is what viewers pick up on without being able to name it: the person is not standing in an environment, they are standing in front of a picture.
A volume runs a real-time engine that knows where the camera is. Camera tracking captures position and orientation, and the engine recalculates perspective continuously. As the camera moves, near and far elements shift against each other at different speeds, exactly as they would in a real room. This parallax is why in-camera VFX works, and why the finished take comes straight out of the camera instead of being assembled later.
A wall without tracking can be an excellent wall. It does not become a volume, because the decisive component is missing.
How to spot it in a quote
You do not need to be a technician. Four questions to the rental company are enough, and the answers come quickly:
- Is genlock or camera sync included? Any hesitation here and it is an event screen.
- What is the refresh rate, and what frame rate does the wall accept? Two different numbers get confused here, because both are quoted in hertz. Refresh rate is the internal LED driving frequency, measured in kilohertz, and it decides whether bands end up in your frame. Frame rate is the rate of the video signal, typically 50 or 60 Hz on event gear, and it decides how fast you can shoot. Our stage accepts 100 Hz, so genlocked recording up to 100 frames per second is possible, meaning real slow motion in front of the wall. Event quotes, by contrast, usually list only area and resolution.
- What pixel pitch, and how close may the camera get? A supplier who rents shoot-ready gear gives you both without being asked.
- Is camera tracking included, and which engine runs on it? This is the dividing line between a display surface and a filming tool.
A fifth question is always worth asking: who is standing next to you on the shoot day? A calibrated wall is of little use if nobody is there to adjust the environment when the light does not sit right.
When the event screen is the right choice
It would be dishonest to talk the event LED screen down. For its purpose it is the better and considerably cheaper tool, and the companies in that market are good at what they do.
Take the event screen when the image is mainly meant for people in the room: a stage backdrop at a conference, an in-house exhibition, a product launch, a kick-off, a hybrid event with a livestream. Filming alongside it is fine too, as long as the wall stays a backdrop and the recording is not the actual product.
Take a volume when the footage is the product: brand films, product films, recruiting clips, trade fair videos, interview series, anything that gets edited, scored and published over months. The difference pays for itself in the first take, and the event screen’s savings would be gone by the time you booked a reshoot.
What it actually costs
Our fixed stage in Erlangen, about 20 minutes from Nuremberg, is a 35 sqm LED volume with camera tracking and an Unreal Engine workflow. The wall puts out 1,500 nits, bright enough to visibly light your subject rather than merely sit behind it, and it runs at a 100 Hz frame rate for genlocked slow motion up to 100 fps. Dry hire starts at 1,450 € per half day, the studio with an operator at 2,500 € per day. When your subject cannot travel, a machine on the shop floor for instance, we bring that same full 35 sqm wall to you anywhere in Germany: from 4,500 € per day plus travel, with roughly three days of build time beforehand and around 63 kW of power provided on site.
Set our day rate beside an event screen quote and we rarely win. Set it beside the cost of a second shoot day and we regularly do.
In short: an event LED screen is built for eyes, an LED volume for sensors. Both are rented by the day, both are called an LED wall, and only one of them delivers an image that survives the edit. The question is not which is better, but who ends up looking at your picture.
