“Renting a virtual production studio” sounds like booking a room, and that is exactly where shoot days go wrong. What you book is not a room but a chain of wall, camera, tracking and engine that has to stay in sync frame by frame. When one link fails you will not see it in the brochure, you will see it in the footage. These eight questions settle that beforehand, and they work with any supplier, not just with us.
1. How much of the wall is actually usable?
Square metres are a marketing number. What counts is the width and height of the continuous surface, and whether there is a corner or a ceiling section. A straight wall is enough for interviews, product shots and dialogue. As soon as the camera pans wide, the corner decides whether the frame edge holds. Ask for the widest camera angle possible without the wall edge showing. Our fixed stage runs 35 m² of LED surface, with the details on our virtual production and XR studio page.
2. Does the pixel pitch match your shooting distance?
Pixel pitch determines how close the camera can get before moiré appears. A finer pitch allows shorter distances and costs more. More useful than the datasheet figure is a practical answer: from what distance and at what focal length is the image clean? A studio that cannot answer that concretely has probably never tested it systematically.
3. Is there real camera tracking?
Without tracking, an LED wall is a flat backdrop. Only real-time capture of the camera position produces the perspective shift that creates spatial depth. Ask which tracking system is in use and how long calibration takes on the shoot day. How wall, tracking and engine work together is covered in the LED wall explained.
4. Is the setup genlocked?
Genlock keeps the LED wall, the camera and the render machine frame-accurately in sync. Without it the footage shows banding or stutter that post cannot cleanly repair. This is the point where a volume built for cameras separates itself from a rented event wall. The full comparison: LED wall rental, event screen or virtual production.
5. Who operates the engine?
The environment runs in a real-time engine, usually the Unreal Engine. Someone on set has to drive it: change the time of day, swap the backdrop, adjust the light. Clarify whether that operator is in the price or whether your team provides one. We split this by rental model: dry hire means stage and technology with your crew, while the operator model puts our team on the wall, the tracking and the engine. Both are listed with day rates on our pricing page.
6. Are you bringing an environment or using a library set?
Starting from an existing set library means no lead time. A custom brand or factory environment is a one-off item that pays for itself from the second production onwards. Ask which formats your own data has to arrive in and how much lead time the build needs. If the data already exists in engineering, see from CAD model to film set.
7. Do the logistics on site work?
The least glamorous point costs the most time. Ground-level load-in or stairs? Parking at the door or a garage with a height limit? Is there a make-up area and a green room? How late can the team stay? Our stage sits in Erlangen, twenty minutes from Nuremberg, with motorway access, parking on site and ground-level load-in. For international productions, the crew works in English from the tech call to the final cut, see video production in Germany.
8. What exactly does the day rate cover?
The most expensive ambiguity. Get it in writing: how long a shoot day is defined to be, what lighting and sound include, who supplies the environment, and what is billed on top. Two quotes only become comparable once both answer those four points the same way. More on that in the budgeting guide.
The quick test
A studio that answers all eight questions without hesitation produces for cameras regularly rather than renting out a wall. One that dodges three of them will settle those questions on the shoot day instead, and then they cost shooting time.
